Wireless dongle - a gotcha and the fix

Postby linicks » Mon Jan 12 2015 - 21:50:38

I got a new Pi, camera, case etc. today to set up a fish tank cam :)

I need to use a wireless dongle, and used the one that came with my original pi running Slackpi.

All well and good, following the slackbook docs, I got the dongle working perfect on my notebook with both static and DHCP address.

Setting up the new Pi over ethernet, I configured the wireless dongle, and ifconfig showed wlan0 getting a static DHCP address, and all was working. BUT, as soon as I unplugged the ethernet cable, I lose contact with the box - no ping, no ssh, no nothing.

One thing I couldn't work out was the wlan0 was ip address x.x.x.55 and the ethernet was x.x.x.56 - so with the cat5 cable connected, I could ssh to x.x.x.55 - take it out, and I couldn't ?

After a lot of head scratching and wearing google out, it appears that the Pi has a funny issue in that if ethX is UP, then the wireless wlan will get the command but try to send replies back over ethernet (obviously a different IP).

So I found that adding:

/sbin/ifconfig eth1 down

to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

turns off ethX and then the wireless dongle will work after reboot (or you can do it via commandline without a reboot). :)

BTW, the camera works great - took 5 minutes to get it up and running.

Nick

I got this camera here (with a replacement 600mm ribbon cable):

https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi-ca ... mera-board

BTW, to activate the camera add:

start_x=1

to /boot/config.txt

and to turn of the led light on the camera add:

disable_camera_led=1

Then use /opt/vc/bin/raspistill and rapisvid

to operate it (there are loads of pages around explaining those commands).

Now, the orange monster (when he appears - very shy, hides a lot) is this:

http://freshaquarium.about.com/od/catfi ... atfish.htm

but ours is orange as he is an albino! (we also have a smaller black one too). When I bought it, he/she was about 1" long - as you can see (when it's about), it's now about 4" long - keeps knocking over/moving the stones and uprooting the weeds, bloody thing :D
